Artisanal Heirlooms
Sourced from the high altitudes of the Himalayas, where Changthangi goats produce the finest pashmina wool under harsh conditions.
Our Process
-
Our wool comes from the underbelly and neck of Changthangi goats found exclusively in the higher Himalayan plateaus, where temperatures dip below 40°F. Twice yearly, their wool is delicately sheared - a maximum 40,000 tonnes produced annually. This raw wool undergoes meticulous cleaning to remove impurities and longer guard hair. Only 35% of the original sheared wool by weight is then carded to align the finest fibers.
-
The carded pashmina wool is spun into fine yarn, then meticulously handwoven on looms by artisans interlacing the lengthwise and crosswise threads. Achieving the desired texture, thickness and patterns requires immense expertise - an Atelier Sona stole takes around 1.5 days to weave. Each stole is individually dyed using non-toxic, biodegradable, Azo-free dyes, then delicately washed and ironed.
-
Our pieces undergo microscopic testing and certification at the Pashmina Certification Center. They are then sent to Uttar Pradesh, India where the Sona motif is delicately hand-embroidered using gold thread. Due to pashmina's delicate nature and ultra-fine weave, this quality of embroidery requires master artisans with exceptional skill.
